10 Years of Friends in 10 days: The Way the Industry is Shifting toward Cultural Norms Online Subscription Streaming as a Creative Industry

What is a creative industry? According to Rosamond Davies and Gauti Sigthorsson in Introducing the Creative Industries A creative industry “first requires some form of input of human creativity, second they are carriers of meaning, and three they contain some form of  intellectual property” (1).

The creative industries provide employment for a wide variety of people. The experiences that people view can be turned into goods and services which in turn provide employment within these industries.

In this case I’m going to use Netflix and online streaming subscription services as a model for a creative netflix inforgraphicindustry.

Just as the industrial revolution transformed production of goods and in doing so the demand for creative goods like books and garments, but it also devalued the job of production. “The division of labor thus had the effect of elevating the role of design in which painters and sculptors were often employed, and devaluing the role of production which became divided into a set of lower-skilled tasks” (Davies 36).

The internet has transformed the way in which we consume goods and in a similar fashion places higher value on the designer rather the role of the labor placed into production.

I personally look to online streaming or subscription services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, but YouTube infographicalso free streaming services like YouTube in looking at how the creative industries expand and transform with time.

Film and television have allowed themselves to become a mass-produced commodity rather than just an art form. These subscription channels have completely revolutionized the way that the modern viewer watches television. Television has now conformed to its audience. Netflix originals and full series on these service sites provides everything all at once to conform to the way that audiences now binge watch, which can be defined as absorbing as much television of film content at any given time in one sitting. Some people can clear out an entire afternoon, and watch an entire season of any given show. When the entire series of Friends was first offered on Netflix streaming viewers were able to watch ten years of friendstelevision at any given time thanks to binging. Television now allows the viewer to watch on their own schedule in their own time.

The internet as literally made online content a commodity and thus a very profitable and successful creative industry. Surrounding the television for a televised event is becoming less of a practiced social event. It makes you wonder what the future holds for the industry of television.
